Miconazole Nitrate: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Miconazole Nitrate is the main ingredient found in Neosporin AF and Monistat. Miconazole Nitrate is an antifugal medication, but many people claim that it grows hair and grows it FAST! I'm not really into growth aids, but I thought I'd write about it for the blog. Be careful though the Neosporin AF and some of the Monistat brands contain Mineral Oil (all except Monistat 3 or 7). If you're going to try it many people suggest using 2% Miconazole Nitrate (check the main ingredient) and make sure you're buying Neosporin AF as it is different from regular NEOSPORIN (it's in blue packaging, used to treat athlete's foot). There's also Feet Accompli, it claims to be the Ultimate Antifungal Pedicure Cream. It contains the 2% Miconazole Nitrate but also has Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, and Vitamin E. It's also $34 a tube. I did some research is basically my run down of Miconazole Nitrate.

THE GOOD (According to people that use it)
  • Grows hair long
  • Grows hair quick
  • Can be mixed with oils
  • Can be applied daily for optimal results
  • Reduces Shedding
THE BAD
  • No scientific evidence to support the safety of using on scalp
  • Kind of expensive
  • Embarassing to buy
  • Cannot be used by anyone pregnant/expecting
THE UGLY
  • Some have claimed it caused them untolerable headaches (most GENERIC BRANDS except Family Dollar brand)
  • Others claim it's more of a scalp movement than a headache and it's not that bad
  • Grows hair so fast that it's scary with some users experiencing as much as 1" of growth per month
  • USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

  1. Seriously, thank you for this post because I have always wondered about the hype of this method. I'll be patiently waiting on your results even though I think you grow out your hair great w/o the help.

  2. I read the same information on one of the hair care chat rooms and I was highly interested but my main concern was, Is it something you have to use constantly, or can you do it for a month or so and then stop? And then if you do stop will you lose any of the growth? (i.e. shedding or larger amounts of hair loss) I've been asking these questions for awhile and still no one has give me an answer if you know something it would be awesome!

  3. I'm going to get some tomorrow and let you know how it goes. If it doesn't work, I suppose I can still use them but I've never had a yeast infection and I haven't had athlete's foot since middle school.

  4. You can stop using it at any time, it won't cause excessive breakage.

  5. How exactly should you apply it? Just to scalp? Daily?

  6. I bought some today, I'll let you know how it's going ~B.N.

  8. I will be trying this and taking pictures of the progress. I did more research on this & I'm convinced that it'll work. Now I just have to put it to the test.

  9. yooooo I tried it and it works ....I massage it in my scalp 2 x a day.. and ppl were like omg how did your hair get so big??? ...but I have to say I had a huge headache the first week and sometimes it comes and goes but its worth it (also I make sure to take care of my ends..no use in having your hair grow fast and not being able to retain it right?

  10. Well I hope this works 'cause I'm thinking about trying it I'm striving for a specific length and braids helps my hair to grow but if this really works it i probably can use it with the braids to help get to that length.

  11. I really want to try this but when i went to the store the monistat brands 3 and 7 had the mineral oil. Also most most to the kits had the prefilled applicators. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

  12. Hi everyone,
I would really love to try this method. We get this cream here in the UK under the brand name of Daktarin which clearly states it should not be used on the hair. Now, however carefully I would apply the cream to my scalp, Im sure some would get onto my hair. I dont want to wake up bald someday. Does anyone have any experience of using this cream where it has gone onto your hair during application? Thanks, JJ

  13. Just wondering if you've tried this and if so, what did you mix it with?

  14. Well,
I am a hair care distributor, and I have used numberous combinations of herbal botanicals, so one reason I think MN is worth a try is because I am 45 and thinning in the crown, for an unknown reason. I have used MTG, but it does bother my head somewhat, but it grows my daughters hair like a weed, and the MTG gives off a beautiful shine on her hair. If I rembember correctly, about a year ago, I had to go to the woman doctor.(This is not meant to gross anyone out, but please take every word I say as acquired knowledge) I found out I did have a yeast infection, so I did get the Monistat MN, and I used it for about 7, days, but looking back, If I am not crazy, after about 3 days, I really did notice a bush, so I am convinced it works. Knowledge is power!!Not meant to offend. I did on today purchase the generic brand, and I mixed the MN with some Kemet moisturizing creme with aloe, and I also used Africas Best herbal oil, and I mixed the creme up and I can't wait for the results. I am applying it at least two times, and I am putting a plastic cap on my head after I apply. I am looking for positive results. I will let you all know!! God Bless!!

  17. Dandruff is a fungal infection of the scalp (not a dry-scalp disorder). The antifungal medications like miconazole and ketaconazole help hair growth because they stop the fungus. Ketoconazole comes in a shampoo, over-the-counter, Nizoral A-D. It's easier to use than putting Neosporin on your head.

  18. I just got some today but like stated before they all come with the suppositories and a small tube of cream. Can you the suppositories be broken open and used like the cream?

  19. How exactly is the cream used?

  20. I mix mine with sulfur 8 i broght my cream from the dollar tree in my city.

  21. Is it not so weird that some medications can be used for other reasons altogether; in this case I refer to 'cosmetic' ones. Yes I have tried the Daktarin aka miconazole nitrate known here in UK to treat athletes foot, vaginal thrush and even mouth fungal infections mmm not nice huh.. but be careful also if you are taking other medications as this may affect how they are absorbed especially if you are diabetic, epileptic on meds or using meds to prevent blood clots like warfarin etc. look at this page which is really useful ps. just cut and paste... http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcmed.nsf/pages/pccdakcm/$File/pccdakcm.pdf
U know what I did try this cream as I said and everyone is so shocked my hair was shaved to the nape of my neck and in a month I had an inch growth. Also watch the length of time u use this cream for tho ask a pharmacist if you can use it continuously as with every medication there are limits or not as to how long u can carry on using a med when u considering side effects on the body so be responsible? lol in this case quick hair growth. But yeah on another subject I also use Anusol cream u know which one I mean (for haemroid treatment .. lol not that I have any), but I use it round the eye area so I dont get crows feet on my eyes.. no lie I look 10/15 years younger - well so many people say .. I get carded when buying cigs or alcohol in many places and sometimes its jus not funny, but now I just take it in my stride.. uuhh I've given too much away now..
PS - please be responsible how u use medication - ***** AT YOUR OWN RISK *****

  24. I went to Walgreens to get this. Got to the isle, and punked out! LOL I ended up buying the shampoo instead. It works, but unfortunately does like all other shampoos and dries my hair out. But I have a solution: Get my mom to buy miconazole for me! Hehe

  25. I am so close to trying this method because its much more affordable compared to other growth aids, however I worry about the side effects I heard it causes headaches and I already have issues with migraines :-(
This post is very informative and I refer to it often when debating whether or not I should try Miconazole Nitrate.

  26. I've heard great things about this product also but I was wondering is there a large percentage of people that usually experience the symptoms that you have described?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Since I'm a dare devil (lol) I decided to try this MN Growth Aid. I wanted to see what the whole hype about it was. I obviously read about it first prior to actually trying it. I tested it in my freshly relaxed middle part with just the Monistat alone to see if I would get a headache and on the rest of my scalp I had it mixed with Sulphur 8, Vitale EVOO, Carrot Oil, Castor Oil and Water. Using the MN alone gave me a minor headache but when mixed it left a refreshing tingling sensation. In two weeks I got half an inch of NG (I relaxed my hair two weeks before so I could actually see the results) I also have a VERY itchy scalp and every since I started using MN, my scalp doesn't itch anymore =)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I bought some today. Mixed it 50% with sweet almond oil and rubbed all over my scalp. Minor headache a couple of hours later. I'll dilute it even more next time. Will probably put on scalp every other day.

  29. I bought the Feet Accompli online and just received it yesterday. I applied it to my scalp last night & this morning. I have not gotten a headache or anything. I really hope this works. I recently got the Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy also and my curls are so loose I can barely get a fro going, so hopefully this will grow my newgrowth as fast as the people say and I'll have even more loose curls to swing around. :) I'll keep yall posted.

I've been transitioning for 8 months and natural for 1. Within that time period I've grown 5" using the MCN only 3 time.I can say it worked for me. But then I have type 3C hair and it absorbs everything and I've never had a problem with dandruff, only dry hair. Maybe your starting point makes a difference to how well it works for you.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well I used the Feet Accompli for about 3 weeks consistently and I did see quite a bit of growth (maybe 3/4...but I haven't measured). I now use it a few times a week, but plan to get back on it and do it for at least a month straight. It has no smell to it, but I think it's necessary to wash it out every three or four days [at the very least] cause I didn't like the build-up feel on my scalp. Prior to using this my scalp would get flaky after 3 or 4 days of no washing and I noticed that was not the case while I used this. Good stuff.

  32. I tried this a while back and it really does work. HOWEVER, I suffered some pretty bad headaches for 2 months. I figured out that the key was to not apply it daily as I had been doing and as many seem to be able to do without side effects. I applied it every 3 days instead. But I will say that the MN method is one of only 2 products that has ever shown actual signs of increased growth rate for me. The other one was Nugro.

  33. I don't understand why people would be embarrassed. It's not like you are buying something to clear up an STD. A yeast infection is a totally different animal. Who cares what the cvs employee thinks of you anyway. With that being said I am so tempted to try this but if something is strong enough to cause headaches what other unknown damage could it cause and why hasn't monistat realized a product then that they know would work. I'm sure they know the product can grow hair. There must be a reason they haven't capitalized on the hype. Maybe I'm thinking to much but I'm really thinking of trying it but I don't want brain cancer 3 years later. :(

  34. I agree with Nika. I really want to use it, but if it can seep in and cause migraines, I don't know how safe it is to use. :x

  35. This all makes me a bit nervous... Especially since Feet Accompli specifically says not for use on scalp. I think that I will try Nizoral. It is an anti-dandruff shampoo made with Ketoconazole, an anti fungal treatment similar to Miconazole, but clearly tested for use on the scalp..... will let you know how it works for hair growth.

Just started using MN for about 3 days now and WOW! I'm already seeing results just colored my hair right before because I'm doing a 30 day challenge and I want to see my results... this was also my last time coloring my hair because I want to grow out my natural color. Just wanted to say MN does work and I have experienced light headaches while applying the mixture to scalp then it goes away. Not sure if it's because this is a new product for me but I am seeing results and I'm going to stick with it for 30days or until my mixture is gone. If the headaches stop then I'll continue with this product if not I'll take whatever length I gained and appreciate it and stop.. my mixture is mn(monistat brand) & castor oil & olive oil

  38. HELLO EVERYONE,
I'M "NOT" YELLING. I'M IN ALL CAPS TO GET EVERYONE'S ATTENTION. TO AVOID THE HEADACHES ASSOCIATED WITH MN, DILUTE IT WITH OIL. I MIX MONISTAT 7 WITH THE HOME HEALTH CASTOR OIL FROM VITAMIN SHOPPE ALONG WITH COCONUT OIL AND AVOCADO OIL. I SPOKE TO MY PHARMACIST AND HE SAID THAT IT'S PRETTY SAFE TO USE THE 2% MN AND ANYTHING STRONGER THAN THAT HE CANNOT VOUCH FOR. MY DOCTOR ALSO TOLD ME IT'S OKAY TO USE TOPICALLY, BUT DON'T DO IT LONG TERM OR LONGER THAN 2 MONTHS. THIS IS ONLY ADVICE FOR MYSELF. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND TRIALS TO FIND OUT WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. THANK YOU AND HTH!

  39. Hello everybody,
I undeerstand that MN makes your hair grow like a weed but does it help decrease hairloss or grow any new hair? Thanks for answering. Anyone out there have any experience with using this against hairloss....i'm fading fast!

  40. Ok, I'm really excited abt trying this method... What abt mixing it with Kemi Oyl or Jojoba oil?? Thoughts anyone?? Thx!

  41. I can't speak for everyone else but the MN mix worked for me. I mixed it with a few drops of rosemary oil & lavender oil. I also mixed it with apricot kernel oil to dilute it some and make it easier to apply to my scalp. I add a little peppermint oil for a nice smell. I already suffered with headaches so I kno they weren't caused by this. I had bangs and I REALLY grew tired of them. After almost 2 mths my bangs went from just sweeping the bridge of my nose to the middle of my lips. That's a little over 2 inches. I think its worth a try but as always do what works for you. HTH

I will comment that yes, I just started trying this method. I ran across a few vides on YouTube, followed some links, read about it on some forums and then did some drug side effects research. I scoured the internet but couldn't find any negative side effects aside from headaches/migraines. No claims of hair loss or the infamous brain tumors. After all that I felt comfortable trying it for a 60 day challenge as I had some partially used Monistat 7 from a previous yeast infection earlier this year (period started so didnt need to complete the cycle). I've applied the Monistat 7 three times to my scalp. The 1st time there was a week bw that and my 2nd application but now I'm aiming for every other day.

After the first application, I noticed I could now 'catch' the hair in my kitchen in order to twist it, just days before I could not do that....

I dont mix it up in one batch bc I've heard it can go bad that way. Instead, I take about an inch of the MN. Squirt about a teaspoon or more of pure Aloe Vera Gel on it. Mix it with my finger until it's like a white gel. I then slowly add drops of water to it until its a liquid-y consistency for me to pour into a travel size squirt bottle. I then add a couple drops of any oil then a little more water. I then shake shake until the mixture is all mixed. no 'chunks' with this method. I spritz my roots and massage it in.

The first time I applied it, I felt a very slight headache that lasted less than 10 mins. I have not experienced this in subsequent applications.

I'm transitioning. Currently in month 6. My hair previously grew about 1/3"/month. I'm hoping that I can get another 2 inches out by the end of July. I've got a little ruler so that I can document my growth. If I'm able to achieve this I may consider big chopping before a huge relocation that will leave me without a stylist I trust at the end of July.

I do not plan to use the MN for more than 60 days in succession. I'll take a break and might go another round in a few months if it's successful.

Piping in to say I'm alive and well. Today I've been using the MN for roughly 2 weeks. I don't have an exact compare and contrast measurement bc I discovered that the front piece I measure last time has some heat damage. So I'm not sure if my control of 2" is any good. What I CAN SAY is that the hair in the back of my nape, the 'kitchen' area, has grown leaps and bounds. The little area that I just 'started to catch' is a bonafied 2 inches. I'm stunned. The little fuzzy neck hairs under it are growing. I'm noticing that around my hairline seems to be coming in well. I've never considered it thin, but i guess it was. New hair is definitely growing in.

As mentioned, I apply the MN spritz every other night. I'm sure I missed a night earlier last week. I massage it in then redo my knots or twist before bed. I continue to be headache free. I've not noticed any symptom beyond hair growth.
