It as an Environment Working Group's Cosmetic Database hazard score of 4 which makes it a moderate hazard. I have not found any organic or safer alternatives (though I have heard of gelatin and I am experimenting... stay tuned), so this is what I'm sticking with. The most dangerous ingredients are at the bottom of the list so I made an educated conscious decision to buy it and use it. It does contain parabens, but like I said it's one of the last ingredients. I use it once every 3 months so it's really not a big deal to me. I'm not that strict in my hair regimen. However, if I find pure gelatin works just as well... I will be making the switch.
Here are the ingredients as they are listed on the package and their hazard scores.
- Polyacrylamidomethylpropane Sulfonic Acid Hazard Score 0
- Water (Aqua) Hazard Score 0
- Collagen Amino Acids Hazard Score 1
- Hydrolyzed Elastin Hazard Score 0
- Propylene Glycol Hazard Score 4
- Hydrolyzed Collagen Hazard Score 0
- Methylchloroisothiazolinone Hazard Score 6
- Methylisothiazolinone Hazard Score 6
- DMDM Hydantoin Hazard Score 7
- Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate Hazard Score 4
- Methylparaben Hazard Score 8
The packaging and ingredients have recently changed and here are the ingredients in the new formula in the order they appear on the packaging...
Water (Aqua, Eau)
Collagen Amino Acids
Polyacrylamidomethylpropane Sulfonic Acid
Propylene Glycol
Hydrolyzed Elastin
Gelatin
Methylparaben
DMDM Hydantoin
Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate
Methylchloroisothiazolinone
Methylisothiazolinone
I have yet to use the new formula. I see that it contains gelatin which I think is great because it's natural. (Sorry PETA and vegans, it's not good for you since gelatin is a product of animals.) However, I also notice that Methylparaben and DMDM Hydantoin have moved higher up in the list which means there may be more of it in this new formula. I'm thinking I just may need to stock up on the old version.
Now, I don't use it as directed. Instead, I usually pre-poo (45 minutes of a deep moisturizing conditioner) wash and condition my hair and then apply the Nexxus Emergencée on my clean wet hair --in four sections like I do everything else -- making sure to get every centimeter of my hair from root to tip. I let it dry on my hair until it gets hard -- that takes about 20 minutes under a dryer and I DO NOT USE A PLASTIC CAP when I'm under the dryer. It just doesn't work that way for me and I'm not saying you should do it this way... I'm just saying this is what worked for me. Next I rinse it out and I apply a really amazing moisturizing conditioner or rinse and let it sit for 5 minutes before I rinse out and start roller setting. After this my hair is straighter, less frizzy, and super shiny.
Now, I wouldn't put it in my holy grail because it's not organic or 100% natural, but it's definitely one of those products I have to have in my life.

Which oil free, protein free conditioner do you use after using the Nexus Emergencee?
thanks for the information on the hazard ratings
haha anonymous read my mind. i have the exact same question
rite aid had a half price sale on this a week ago, I went to every store in my area and bought the product. as you have indicated above, the packaging and ingredients have changed a bit, so the company was getting rid of the "old" stuff. its a good product
Couldn't find it anywhere. I guess because they're changing the packaging like others said. Found it at walgreens. They had one old and one new version and I got the old version since everyone raves about it. Going to try it your way tonite :-)
Okay this stuff is the truth. I just got the best blowdry I've ever gotten. About to flat iron but I can tell my hair is going to come out really smooth and silky. This is the only new thing I used so I can definitely give it the credit. I hope the new formula works just as well.
How often do you guys use this? Every week like the box says? How long does one bottle usually last you?
hi
