Sophie Lorraine Hall

Meet Sophie Lorraine Hall from Surrey.

Sophie's on her hair ...
I wash my hair every 4 days and deep condition my hair about once a month. I trim my hair about every 3-4 months (not very good). I hardly ever use heat on my hair, but I use a blow dryer to straighten it about once every 3 months. I use a semi-permanent colour on my hair every 6 months to even out the colour and give it shine. Sometimes, the night before I wash my hair, I put lots of jasmine oil on it. I like the smell and think it adds shine. I don't have any favourite hair products. I have been trying things since about the age of 10 and am still trying things! I have not found a product, or range of products, that I am 100% happy with. As with products, I have not found a favourite salon either. I find "black" hairdressers to be less trained in mixed-raced hair that is not relaxed and that conventional salons ignore the needs of afro-textured hair. Thus, I am still trying different salons and stylists! My favourite way to wear my hair is just down, as it is. I am very proud of my hair and tend to dress and do my make-up around my hair instead of to match my hair to what im wearing!

Andy Allo

Meet Andy Allo a full-time artist through and through.

Andy Allo on going natural...
I'd say I've been natural with my hair out naturally and crazy about 2 years. I always wore my hair pulled back in to a bun. I was inspired by a friend who would wear her hair curly and so one day I tried to do my hair like hers and that was the beginning.

Andy Allo's hair care regimen...
I wash/condition my hair about once a week. The only time I ever color my hair is when I do a hair show. I trim my hair about every 5-6 months, only when I flat iron my hair.

Daily Regimen: If I don't have to work I usually put my hair in a high ponytail but if I do have work or I'm going out, I brush my hair only in the shower and then air dry it and shape with my hands to get it to an afro.

Andy's favorite hair products...
Burts and Bees Deep Conditioner, Shu Uemura Moisture Velvet Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner AND Loma Pearatin Fortifying Repairative Serum.

Andy's favorite hair style...
I like to wear my hair in an afro and sometimes I'll do a fro hawk or some cornrows on one side to cary the afro but there's always some more of an afro.

Lee Waddell

Meet Lee Waddell from Houston, Texas.

Lee's hair care regimen regimen...
I wash every 3 days, platting 4-6 braids every night with light moisturizer. I deep condition every two-three weeks. I deep condition with hot olive oil, beneath a plastic shower cap, wrapped in a big towel. Regular olive oil, like from the cooking aisle in the grocery store. I don't ever comb my hair dry... only true root to tip combing and detangling occurs during my regular washing, during the conditioning, combing from tip to root, in small increments. I braid it after after I've combed the conditioner through, and rinse while it's braided. Air dry over night, and voila! I really don't get it trimmed... I probably should, eh? Very rarely, if ever do I use heat and if I do, it is a blow dryer/diffuser on a low, cool setting.

Favorite products...
Soft Sheen Carson Green Tea & Shea Butter Moisturizer.

Favorite salon...
Uncle Funky's Daughter in Houston, TX.

Favorite hair style...
Down with a side part.

Helen from Quebec

Meet Helen from Montreal, Quebec. She is studying to be a child therapist.

Helen on accepting her hair...
I've been natural all my life, but when I was younger I use to hate my curly hair because everyone had straight hair. But now I love it, everyone gives me compliments about it.

Helen's hair care regimen...
I wash my hair two times a week, and I put treatment in my hair at least once every two weeks. My favorite product that I'm using is called MoroccanOil.

Helen's hair tips...
Don't shampoo too often, your hair needs its natural hair oils, don't put any harmful chemicals in your hair, put treatments in your hair, it will make it shiny and healthy.

Helen's favorite hair style...
I like to wear my hair down all the time or in a bun when its hot outside.

Helen on style...
My style is orginal. I don't really dress like anyone... I like to be unique. My favorite places to shop are Sirens, Urban Behavior and Simmons and I must have skinny jeans and my gladiators.

Kristin Rodney

Meet Kristin Rodney from NYC, a creative consultant who specializes web and graphic design.

Kristin on going natural and her har care regimen (in her own words)...

Upon attending Howard University in 2004, I took interest in constantly reinventing myself. I rocked a cropped cut, a bob, relaxed, straight or braided. I even tried blonde, brown, jet-black, and red! Naturally my hair felt the wrath of my spontaneity and I had no choice but to ‘start fresh.’

Excited about another new look, I cut ALL of my hair in 2007. It was an easy transition. All I had to do was let it grow. Since then, I have been focused on nurtured, conditioned, healthy hair!

My hair care regimen...

My hair regimen takes a lot of conditioner and a bit of patience.

Weekly Maintenance: Once a week, usually on a Sunday, I wash my hair gently with Shampoo. Once rinsed out completely, I apply a deep conditioner or a hot oil treatment to my hair. I comb it out with a Denman brush and sit under a heated deep conditioning cap.

Daily Maintenance: I maintain this moisture by co-washing, 2 days a week, in the evening. Once out of the shower, I braid my hair back in five cornrows and cover with a satin cap. I find that this method shaves a lot of time off of my morning routine. When I wake up in the morning. I simply unbraid my hair and go! Its curly, conditioned, semi-dry, and manageable!

On special events, when I want my curls to be more defined I co-wash it, separate it into 5 sections, and finger curl it!

While I used to crave excitement in color and cuts, I currently find enjoyment in creating unique updos. As I am in the arts /creative field, I love experimenting with unique styles and hairdos! Mane & Chic has truly inspired me on my quest to maintain my hair and remain all nat-tur-al. I hope that you find inspiration in my "do" just as I found it in others.
