Chavon Staten Beecham

natural type 3 hair on naturally curly black model
Meet wife, business woman, model and extreme fashionista — Chavon Staten Beecham.

On being curly...
For the most part my hair has always been natural! My early teenage years I use to really reject my curls so I would relax my hair straight! Straightening my hair caused damaged so I stopped and began to wear my natural curls and I loved it!

Hair care regimen...
I get my hair deep conditioned professionally weekly! Often during the week, I treat it myself by using conditioner for thick curly hair. It keeps my hair from drying out.

Hair tips/secrets...
  1. Weekly conditioning
  2. Combing with a widetooth comb
  3. Wearing head scarves at night to avoid breakage
On salons..
My favorite hair salons and stylists are any domincian shop or stylist they really understand my hair.

Favorite hair style...
Natural! Loose and wild! Sometimes a cool faux-mohawk will do too.

Kabrina from Houston

Meet Kabrina from Houston.

Kabrina on going natural...
Natural has been my thing for the past 8 or 9 years. I permed my hair periodically from the ages of 13 to about 21. I stopped because it was not beneficial to my hair. I finally realized that I just needed to stop fighting mother nature and just let my hair be! Just this ye
ar, I have developed a real appreciation for my hair type. Growing to accept who I am as a person has definitely helped me to embrace my hair for what it is ― curls and all.

Kabrina on her regimen...
I try to detangle my hair daily. While in the shower, I use a lightweight conditioner, such as Suave or VO5 that I apply to my wet hair. I then use a wide tooth comb, along with my fingers, to detangle. Afterwards, I lightly towel dry and then I begin the shingling process. It is simply parting the hair into manageable sections and evenly applying products. I start at the nape of my neck and work up. I then blow dry. I should invest in a diffuser! Everyone keeps asking if I use one. I wash my hair once a week, and I'd like to get into the habit of deep conditioning every 2 weeks.

Her daily hair style...During all seasons of the year, my hair is usually curly. If I am at work, I generally wear a low ponytail. On other occasions, I wear my hair with a side part, with one side pinned back. I do this often. Every now and then, I like the look of double strand twists, done wet or dry. If I am feeling Bohemian, crazy and free ― I will wear a fluffy fro. It makes me feel like Amel Larrieux.

Her favorite products...I love Miss Jessie's! If you watch me on You Tube, you know this! I love the hair care line's origins and the fact that they really do reach out to the consumers. My hair has truly benefitted from the oh- so moisturizing Karen's Body Beautiful line. I like the Hair Butter. Good old extra virgin olive oil is great for my hair, and it's pretty cheap compared to the other products I just mentioned.

On her favorite salon/stylist...
Robert Young Salon, in Houston, TX, is my favorite spot. The master stylist, Robert Young, has been working with my hair for the past 2 years. He is very careful about haircutting and will even show you how much hair he will cut before doing it. I refer my curly-haired friends to him.

Kabrina on style...
I love skinny jeans with a fitted top, abstract prints, belted dresses, cocktail dresses, and pretty cardigans. I also love vintage clothing. Clothing from the 1920s particularly interests me. I love Forever21 even though I am 29! This place helps me to keep up with the trends. I love to window-shop at vintage stores such as Wear it Again and Sam here in Houston.

Liz from the Netherlands

Meet Liz a training coordinator for a non profit organization. She's been natural for 8 years.

On going natural...
My mom started relaxing my hair when I was young, because I would never let her touch/comb my hair. Once you start relaxing it, you have to continue doing it. So on my 18th birthday (inspired by Shakara Ledard) I decided to cut of my hair and go natural!

On her hair care regimen...
It depends on the weather. But usually I wash my hair every other day with shampoo (herbal essences), put in a conditioner & leave it in for a few minutes, comb it through and rinse well! Put in IC hair polisher and dab it with a towel.

Favorite hair products...
  • IC hair polisher (wouldn’t leave the house with it!)
  • Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding
  • Dark & Lovely Ouchless detangler (my 3 year old niece uses it, I tried it and it really works haha)
  • Organic Root Stimulator Tea Tree Oil
Favorite salon and place to buy hair products...
I live in the Netherlands and we don’t have that many good places. So I prefer doing it myself. I don’t trust people with my hair. I usually get my hair products whenever I go to the states or when people come over.

Favorite hair style...
The "I-just-rolled-out-of-bed-look" or one big cornrow in the front of my hair.

Favorite places to shop for clothes...
H&M, Blanco ( Spain ) and Zara

Wardrobe must-haves...
A black dress & black peep toe pumps and big earrings.
