Hair Horror Stories: OMGreen

Reader submitted, Elga writes:

When I was relaxing my hair, I used to change its color every other week. This time, I had been blonde for 2 weeks and I was ready for something else. I was a student and my roommate would do my hair for free. She warned me that it would damage my hair, but I didn't care because I thought my hair was strong. So here I am one day sitting in the room while she is coloring my hair to a brunette tone. We didn't have plastic gloves; instead, we used plastic grocery bags. I suddenly hear my roomate say, "OMG, OMG, OMG". I started freaking out, turned around and my roomate had a big patch of hair in her hand. I ran to the bathroom to rinse the color like a crazy woman. Once I was done I came back into the room and my roommate was still saying, "OMG, OMG,OMG". I was wondering what the hell was going on with my hair and she gave me a mirror. You should have seen my face when I realized that instead of being a brunette, my hair had turned a dirty greenish color. Not only had I lost a big patch of hair, but my hair turned green. I had to wait a week to die my hair to black."

Elga made a lot of mistakes here. I hope you were able to recognize them. What could she have done differently? Leave your suggestions in the comments.

  1. I don't know where to start.

I knew when she said she relaxes and had blonde hair that hair loss or breakage (whether mild or severe) was an inevitable result.

As for the nightmare that came with green hair, a patch test would have saved the day. A small patch of hair may have been lost, but the damage wouldn't have been as extensive.

  2. Leave it to the professionals. That's why there are hair colorists. Like myself. Haircolor has it's own chemistry; and if you lack this knowledge, disasters like this are inevitable.

  3. I think full blonde and constant coloring on relaxed hair is the big and obvious mistake here. The second is that she probably used a cool or ash brunette color that had a green base; Blonde hair will often show the base of the color you put on it, she should have went with a neutral or "brown-brown" shade. This all could have been avoided by going professional, or at least reading up on hair color chemistry - I highly recommend http://killerstrands.blogspot.com/

  4. She should have check the base of the color before dying it, then her hair would not have turned green. Secondly, perm and frequent dye equal DISASTER. Secondly, if she is using plastic grocery bags as gloves, I am going to assume it is safe to say she does not deep condition frequently as she should since she is coloring her hair. Just a stab in the dark here...

  5. Where do I begin... 1. People don't go to hair school for no reason... She should have gone to a professional, especially for something like color. 2. I am a professional hair stylist and I will NOT perform permanent color services on hair that is relaxed. 3. The way color works can be tricky... her hair was already blond, she could have put a rinse instead of a permanent color (less damage) 4. Her friend should have put a reddish color on her hair before she tried to make her a brunette. Mixing black/brown with Yellow or blond will give you an ashy green dirty look. I guess the best way to learn things is through experience, hopefully she won't ever make this same mistake.
