Tales of the Big Chop: Chiamaka

Chiamaka writes:
I was transitioning for a few weeks, but I didn't like it. Some of my friends were actually encouraging me NOT to cut my hair off. They said I would look "too ethnic" (whatever that means). Get this, I'm Nigerian.

I was craving the BC (big chop) for some reason. Last year, on the Friday of Howard University's homecoming, I decided to chop my hair off and I've LOVED it ever since! The same friends who told me I would look "too ethnic" are the same one's who love my hair now. (Not that I needed their approval anyway). Go with your gut!

  1. I understand what you mean completely. I have always been too scared to drastically cut my hair. But for some reason recently I have felt this need to cut off all my dead hair. I just did my big chop today and I absolutely love it. I finally feel a sense of rightness concerning my hair that I have honestly never felt before.

  2. Congrats on your BC. It's so invigorating isn't it? :-)
I would also try KCCC: kinky curly curling custard. One if my friends told me about it. I used it and I've been telling my other natural friends to try it. I love it!!!

  3. Sadly many African Americans still suffer from a slave mentality that makes us hate our natural features. Its encouraging to hear young sisters who are wise and courageous enough to love themselves, despite the self-hatred around you. I say all power and blessings to you. The internet is a wonderful way of finding others that are like-thinkers, that will be supportive. Peace to you!
