Have your bad experiences with hair stylists made you afraid to go to salons? How long has it been since you've been to a professional? Do you miss having someone else do your hair or are you just fine doing it yourself?
I haven't been to a stylist since July of last year. I'm terrified of how someone who doesn't specialize in curls will handle my hair and what damaging products they'll use. But I SO miss having someone else wash my hair.
When looking for a stylist I think it's important to do your homework. If you don't get a recommendation from someone that you trust, then you really need to put the energy into researching your potential stylist's background as well as what type of further education they continue to do. I think people oftentimes are lazy when it comes to doing the necessary legwork to have a quality person in their head, and sometimes you get back what you've put into the process.
Yes I have had a bad experience with a stylist, so the last time I went to her was when I decided to go natural a year and a half ago. I do NOT miss going to someone else. I now know how to take care of my own hair and would rather not let other people's hands touch my hair.
Yeah I am afraid of stylist. If they are working with my actual hair (weaves and extensions are different) 1. The first stylist experience broke of all my hair at the age of 12 and my hair at the nap has had problems growing ever since.(and this wasn't a perm)
2. The stylist did my perms for me but she always seem insincere to me. And always complained that my hair is so resistant to perm but my scalp is too sensitive.
3. So deciding to grow out my perm I went to braids and eventually weaves. That point I didn't have a permanent stylist but when I settled I decided to use a brand a weft that match my natural hair more naturally and was easy to comb, but when I got home it felt like Asian hair and tangled like crazy, it was so obvious that my boyfriend noticed it was switched I was very upset because I paid so much for that weft. So never went back to her again.
4. I have heard of dread stories of women who gotten there hair cut too short or a horrible colour to skin tone.
5. I had a friend change her stylist to a more expensive one and end up getting a $ 300 colour and trim at was definately wasn't worth it even her boyfriend complained she was ripped off the colour choice could have been much better.
6. Find a hair dress who will experienced in working in natural hair is hard especially if your not into locks and don't want braids or cornrows.
But I have a few good experience even though it has been brief. But luckily in Toronto a lot of hair stylist are honest and will say we don't have anyone who has "worked with your hair before" or "it would not be right for me to suggest putting this chemical in your hair, it will break it."
So yes in away I am nervous with stylist, but now I am better with asking questions.
Oh Wow, I am terribly afraid. I visited a stylist for my BC last week. The salon sold Miss Jessie's and Curls and told me that they specialized in natural hair. They quoted me $20 to cut my and I felt that was pretty darn good. The stylist wet my hair and then started combing through it with a fine tooth comb. As she continued, my hair was beginning to dry and I had to inform her that if she continued at that rate I would be bald. She sprayed something on it and continued to pick at my hair with a fine tooth comb. By the time she was done, my head was hurting and super soar in the crown. She piled half of the jar o Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercream on my head and let me go home. I am just glad that I learned my lesson early in this process.
I have not been to a salon since summer 2006, but I just set an appointment for next week Thursday. I am still a little afraid, but it's really just that I'm afraid I'll get heat damage. I'm going to a natural salon and she's going to blow my hair out to trim it and give it a shape. I told her that I would wash and detangle my own hair though. I don't miss having someone else do my hair. I'd rather do it myself.
I'm not afraid of stylists, just haven't found one who can do my hair any better than I can.
I got my last relaxer in May of 2001. From that point until I started loc'ing in 2004 my cousin, who is not a professional, took care of my hair. (I did not BC.) The last time I went to a salon was in 2006. I was 2 years into my loc journey and decided I would not pay that much money for a style I could only keep for a week. Even after cutting the locs off in 2008, no one has touched my hair. My tresses and I have gotten well acquainted over the years. ;)
at times I do miss having someone do my hair..I could use a break from time to time. BUT I just will never understand WHY they use a small tooth comb on wet hair and no wide tooth combs on your hair. Among other pet peeves but I'm sure one day I'll find one to go to from time to time.
