Hair Horror: Combs, Smoke and BBQ'd Hair

Pippy writes...

Three weeks before Christmas I decided to get my hair straightened for a new look. My aunt suggested her hairdresser. I hadn't washed my hair for the week (due to exams) so I had to let the hairdresser do something I rarely if ever allow them to do, wash my hair. The shampoo woman shampoos my hair like 3 or 4 times consecutively, which of course leaves my hair stripped and dry. Next, she proceeded to put me under the dryer after spraying my hair with a bit of leave in. No deep conditioner, just a spray on leave in. The stylist who will be doing my hair is quite large and has the tackiest glue-in. She then finds a rattail comb, rakes it through my hair and says, “Your hair is very damaged”. She might as well have just shot my heart. I replied, "Really?" and she says, "Very damaged, see?" To my horror, she shows me my hair coming out all over her shirt and on the floor whilst she is pressing my hair. My hair was burning so much and it was getting so smoky in the salon that they had to open both of the salon doors. All through the session, she keeps telling me how damaged my hair was and I just had to cry. After some consoling, she finishes my hair and it looks bone straight — too straight. A week later, when I wash my hair it doesn't fully revert. I was so desperate to get my kinks back that I used shampoo, but my hair won’t “poof”. I kept washing and as I washed the burnt scent still lingered. To this day, 2 months later, I can still smell the burnt hair. Because the hair is burnt, it keeps falling out. I now have a bald patch in the middle of my head. I am so traumatized that I don’t know when or if I will ever go to another hairdresser.

  1. This literally brought tears to my eyes. Im so SORRY this happened to Pippy! Yet another horror story that keeps me from finding a stylist! I moved to MD from NC 5 years ago--I had 2 bad experiences with stylists and have yet to try another one. When/if I need something done I hold out until I can make a trip back to NC. Its so frustrating because when I attempt to explain my plight to my husband he looks at me like Im crazy. Messing around w/some of these stylists will have you BALD!

  2. Aside from the bald patch, this same exact thing happened to me the 1st time I got my hair professionally straightened after a year and half of growing it out. After washing my hair two weeks later my curls were loose and the front was practically straight all the time. I was devastated to I feel your pain. I've been growing my hair out again and seriously contemplating another BC.

  3. I hate when stylists say your hair is damaged and half the time it really isnt. When i had a relaxer the stylists would always tell me my ends were bad and that i am doing too much to my hair but the only time i put heat on it was every two weeks when i washed it and blow dried and flat ironed. And i would look at my ends constantly no split ends no damage that was just their excuse to cover up some catastrophe she did or to cut my hair super short. I feel your pain, we need to learn to be more vocal with stylists.

  4. Hi ladies
reading this brings back horrible memories but thankfully i started to do intense aphogee protein treatments every 6 weeks and my hair started to recover i had to cut alot of straight ends off but my bald spot grew back and i couldn't find now if i wanted to. That was over a year ago and to this day i refuse to allow anyone straighten my hair. But from this i just learned to never go to a hairdresser that doesn't appreciate natural hair because the woman kept asking me why i wore my hair natural as if it was a bad thing.Never go to hairdresser who isn't a natural hair specialist!

  5. i would have stopped her dead at the shampoo bowl and left for good because if you cant handle natural hair your not a true hair dresser a true hair dresser can handle ALL TYPES of hair and with a smile! it sounds to me like you have a law suit on your hands and i'm very sorry this happened to your hair i can't even imagine how you must feel.
