One of the biggest issues with curly and kinky hair is shrinkage. Lots of women love it, lots of women hate it. The fact that some women can stretch their hair to their waist, but in a natural state it will only ever curl up to their shoulders is kind of amazing. If you have super long hair when straightened, it's cool to rock your hair in a natural state and have an entirely different look to where people think you got a hair cut. How do you feel about shrinkage? If you're not a huge fan of shrinkage all the time, what techniques do you use to stretch your hair?

It is what it is. Sometimes it's like grr but I can always stretch my curls out slightly. The funniest part is when I straighten my hair and it's twice the length, everyone really freaks out!
ReplyDeleteI have a love/hate relationship with shrinkage. My hair is longer in the back than in the front. On the days that I love shrinkage, I can stretch the front of my hair out and then wet the back to shrink up to match the front.
ReplyDeleteI have bra length hair and my hair shrinks up to chin length when wet. I have been trying everything under the moon, sun, and universe to get my curls to loosen up and NOTHING works for me. So I just do protective styling most of the time, bun or lace wig. I don't want to add heat to my hair often so I will straighten it on special occassions, my birthday or christmas.
ReplyDeleteI hate my shrinkage. So frustrating.
I LOVE shrinkage! My hair is also shorter in the front and longer in the back. The back is about midback length, but you would never know it unless you pull on one of my twists. Last summer I wore a wash and go a couple times [which doesn't really work for me because my hair gets tangled] and I was able to wear my hair well above my shoulders with shrinkage!
ReplyDeleteI think shrinkage is awesome.
ReplyDeleteYou can always do styles to stretch (I'm a braid out girl myself), but I have intentions of growing my hair out to BSL or longer - so I wont really have to worry about getting "tired" of long hair...or wanting to switch it up.
I think natural hair - shrinkage and all - is the best of both worlds, if you like variety!
I admit, I don't like my shrinkage at all. My hair really really shrinks. But it is what it is. I do love my hair though.

ReplyDeleteI must admit, I don't like my shrinkage at all. My hair really really shrinks. But it is what it is. I still love my hair
ReplyDeleteI have to stretch my hair or else it tangles like nobody's business! But I love my shrinkage because you can always create different looks. Sometimes the hair is long and other times it's short.
ReplyDeleteI HATE shrinkage. It's my number one least favorite thing about my natural hair. I don't really have long hair- stretched it reaches my collarbone- and I can't even pull my hair back in a bun when its wet because of shrinkage. I HATE it.
ReplyDeleteIt's annoying when I'm trying to do twists. My hair is longer in the back too. I deal with it.
ReplyDeleteShrinkage used to bother the hell out of me, but now I'm so over it. I've learned that working against my natural hair pattern only makes styling and ultimately loving my hair frustrating. I know after I wash my hair, it's going to look like doo doo the first day. After it soaks in all the moisture and goodness (usually by day two), it relaxes itself naturally, then I can really work with it.
ReplyDeletemy hair is coily/curly so when it's wet it 'boings' all the way to my ears and it's longer than that haha hate it sometimes but it's actually kinda cute hehe
ReplyDeleteIn the early days of having natural hair i hated it. I thought i looked like a dude but over time i learned to accept it and don't really mind it now.
ReplyDeleteI would be fine with shrinkage if it wasn't for rain! I band my hair at night to stretch it out, but if there is moisture in the air then it shrinks up again. It even happens if someone is cooking and steam gets into the air.
ReplyDeleteI will definitely be more okay with it when my hair becomes shoulder length. Until then ... I'll look weird with my hair only reaching to my ears haha
