At the beginning of my hair journey, I tried nearly every growth aid under the sun. You name it, I've tried it. Yeah, the nasty bacon smelling MTG, Mega Tek, hair vitamins and supplements. I did it. I was always super consistent too. I would do things for 3-6 months straight every day like clock work. None of them worked for me or increased my growth rate. I've always consistently retained about 1/2" per month. I never got the 3/4" or 1" per month growth rate that some people that use growth aids claim. Through my experiments, I tried to always be objective and never skeptical.
The question today is, do you believe in growth aids? What crazy concoctions have you heard of? What's the craziest thing you've ever tried? Have you tried anything that actually worked? Share in the comments.
What a lot of people don't realise is that growth aids don't do anything unless u are missing something in ur diet. Your hair growth rate is genetic and nothing cn change that. If u are healthy and take vitamins, ur body just excretes them. They don't do anything for you unless u are sick or not eating properly! So its not really a myth as such. Your hair will be affected by aids, if u are unhealthy and suddenly take the supplement u need. If u are healthy, then it will do nothing!
ReplyDeletethat's a great question! To answer it, I honestly don't know! Let me explain....
ReplyDeleteI had weight loss surgery in December, 6 months prior I started on a slew of vitamins getting my body ready not to be able to take in much food. Sometimes the result of weight loss surgery is hair loss!
I was also very, very afraid of losing my hair, which has ALWAYS been thick and healthy for the most part, when I wasn't fryin it! lol!
Anyway, I've been natural going on 3 years by the way and take better care of it now than I ever did! I also still take all those vitamins/supplements, with at least 3 additional ones for hair, nails, etc. They're all a combo of biotin/beta carotene, B12 and E.
My hair does look healthy, but I don't know if it's the vitamins, just me putting better things in my mouth, taking better care of it and not processing my hair.....or ALL of the above!
I do..!
ReplyDeleteI believe in using MN, and I get the "Equate" version (half the price; generic form sold at Wal-Mart stores).
As I'm sure you know, brands seldom matter when it comes to medicine and/ or medicinal items; it is all about matching up the 'active' ingredients.
I am not coy about buying MN bi-weekly (2 tubes per visit; 1 tube per week).
I mix it in with Shea Butter and apply daily to the scalp. I experienced a lot of growth (currently on month 8 of my transition with 5 1/2 inches, coiled up)
And honestly, I was introduced to MN on this site half way thru my transition. I'm curious to know where I'd be had I actually started with it.
I have to agree with this post. I've tried everything and I get the same results. Some times my hair grows faster and sometimes it completely slows down. I have to accept what I have. As long as it is growing and I am retaining length, that's all that matters. Healthy hair=good hair.
ReplyDeleteWait a minute! I must have missed that blog entry....What's MN?!
ReplyDeleteApparently vitamins are no longer useful after a week of opening them..
ReplyDeleteThat MN post is here... http://maneandchic.blogspot.com/2008/02/neosporin-monistat-good-bad-ugly.html
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't recommend it. Try at your own risk. I don't think I ever used that, but a few friends told me they experimented but usually gave up after the excitement wore off.
Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI was reading the other ccomments aobut MN.....
I'm scared ya'll!
I gotta think about this!
I didn't think I'd see MN listed in the comments lol --I admit I tried it as well--mixed it with sulfur hair cream by Marc's.
ReplyDeleteI used it for about 3 months applying it to my scalp almost nightly, I did comparison photos at the start and end that showed a good amount of growth--more than usual.
I'd try it again to see if I get similar results but I've turned into a big slacker when it comes to being consitent w/ my hair. :/
like M&C said use it at your own risk. after a micro braid mishap dang near took all of my hair out on my edges i got despearate and used MN. although i did recieve rapid results and my edges grew back in thick and healthy i did not like the idea of putting that stuff on my head not knowing what it was really doing. lol the results scared me so much that i stopped. i mean anything that you put on your skin is absorbed in the blood stream and mn is not intended for long term usage. i don't know im not an expert lol
ReplyDeleteI am doing the MN now. I started in January 2010 and I have seen a lot of hair growth from it. Almost scary results. But I said I will stick with it through the rest of the winter than I will stop. I'm trying to get to APL by September.
ReplyDelete@ Brittany & Deia:
ReplyDeleteHave you had any side effects?...Headaches or anything?
I would also ask if anybody out there used it that are on any perscription meds!
I am...due to hypertension and Type 2 diabetes, so I'm wondering what the ramifications of all those meds mixing!
Maybe after I get off all the meds, I might try it for about 3 months.
~ So do you use MN alone, or is it meant to be mixed with your conditioner/moisturizer?? ~
