What are the Most Valuable Hair Lessons You've Learned?

What's the most important hair lesson you've ever learned? For me it's been moisturizing and low manipulation. I got the most out of my hair when I stopped combing and brushing it everyday and focused on keeping it moisturized.

  1. it has definitely got to be that oils are NOT moisturizers, but SEAL in moisture. i have done the mistake over years of globbing oil on my hair in the hopes of getting more moisture to "penetrate" my hair shafts and feeding into the myth.

I'm glad to know that coconut oil and jojoba oil are one of the ONLY oils that can ACTUALLY PENETRATE the hair shaft, so now i know that I need to add a moisturizer after washing before sealing with olive oil, etc. =)

  3. Airdrying. The concept was incredible to me. The one most important thing I learned was being able to style my hair without heat.

  4. For me it has been not using the flatiron. During my transition period I consistently flat-ironed my hair because I wanted my hair to be straight. Eventually my hair slowly started breaking off and I finally said I will cut off the relax hair and learn to deal with the curls. Initially, it was aggravating and went back to flat-ironing but it would take so long to get straight that I said "forget this".

Long story short, my valuable hair lesson is don't depend on the flat-iron. Use it sparingly. And when you use it, always use heat protectant.

  5. Keep it simple if you can -- a few products that you know your hair loves. Argan oil will penetrate the hair shaft. AloeVera Gel should be used by every natural. And Pillow Curlers will not tear the hair like a lot of other curlers.

  9. The best moisturizer is WATER!! This is a hard concept to embrace for some because for relaxed or thermally straightened hair we were taught that water is the enemy. Not so for natural hair. My hair loves its almost daily co washes.

  10. The most valuable lesson I've learned has been to listen to my hair and figure out what works for me. Everyone's hair is different and folks are quick to throw out what their personal dos and donts are... but I learned to sift thru what everyone's opinion and just do me.

  11. playing in kinky hair when dry leads to tangles and knots. I know it but I just can't keep my hands out of it!

...conditioner, bun, and lay down my edges with a scarf. My hair says it doesn't like braid-outs so I'm transitioning with this method. It's cute & I <3 it!
