Interesting video. The part where young people start talking about dating preferences is when the TRUTH starts to fly. Very interesting that NONE of the black males stated that they specifically prefer dark skinned women. I mean "exotic vacation"? WTH? Also, what about brown skinned black folks? What category do we fall into?
wow, that was scary when the guy said "dark skin is an exotic vacation." I'm really worried if the guy I am seeing thinks like that. He comes from a culture(india) where it matters. My last bf cared more about his fairness than my darkness and wanted to have a child with me so I guess love changes people's minds.
Also, for some reason I knew the light skin girls were going to say they like dark skin men more. It's like wanting what you never had (especially if people made you an outcast for it).Believe me, I got my fair share of it in school as a little dark skin girl.
I wish that this would take a more objective look at this subject, and maybe she should have interviewed more than just students passing in the caf or the student union. This seems like an opinion piece. I don't know what her perimeters were for this piece so I don't want to judge to harshly because I don't know under what constraints she was working.
Shout out to my alma mater HIU for shedding light on situation of discrimination that still exists amongst one people...black people. We have to do better. How can we expect not to be discriminated against by races outside of our own, when there is discrimination within us? We are one race...the human race...period. There should be no room for discrimination, only the embracing and acceptance of all by all!
Unfortunately, that's not the case. Now, back to lamentable reality... :-/
I agree with anonymous above. I don't know what the parameters for this project were but this seems a little superficial. I'm very dark and I haven't had any runins skin-color wise in a long time. Especially in comparison to what I used to have to deal with. I don't know maybe all the beautiful dark faces on our runways and print ads are starting to change the old outlook of white is right. I thought that we were beginning to get over the skin hump and were working on the hair. I don't know, I guess I would like to see something a little less . . . ubiquitous.
Hi! This is Keah, the creator of the story. Thanks for posting my story and thanks for your comments. To answer questions, I was a broadcast journalism major, so I only reported the facts... i.e. where the light skin/dark skin ideas come from. I went in our student center and asked people general questions because I wanted their real answers and their real opinions. I did not tell them what to say or how to say it and I didn't edit anyone or anything out. It's the raw truth and it's really how some people still feel. The point of the story was to see if it still existed within my school, so I asked people at the source-- the students. And teachers did not really want to be a part of it cause as a private school, their jobs could be on the line...
