My mom didn't straighten my hair with heat until I was in middle school. It was kind of a rite of passage for me at the time. The other day, I went to pick up my little cousins from school and I saw a lot of little girls with straightened damaged hair. It was tragic. You can't tell people how to raise their children. That's for sure, but in your opinion, when it it ok to use heat to straighten a child's hair?
my mom didn't start putting heat to straighten my hair until i got my first relaxer at 12. She'd blowdry my hair, but that was it & she took very good care of it. She'd always (even now!) tell me not to put heat (especially not high heat) to my hair very often.
ReplyDeleteI didn't start until my girls were 5. I only straighten it once a year with the flat iron and maybe one other time during the year with the blow dryer.
ReplyDeleteStraight hair is a "treat" for them not the standard (well at least until they get out of my house and out my pocket then they can do what they want!)
Never. Is that too harsh?
ReplyDeleteLOL!
My mom hot combed our hair quite frequently, but we never had any damage. I don't remember when she started but it definitely was in elementary school. If heat is used correctly and and not all the time I think its fine. My hair was one of my longest lengths when my mom took care of it.
ReplyDeleteI find it utterly deplorable that someone would put heat or chemicals on the hair of a child under the age of 12 years old.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I see a young child with thin, straggly, broken off hair- I know that some lame/ignorant parent has either applied a relaxed, weave or heat to the poor childs hair. SMDH
My mother would stretch and blowdry my hair (sometimes a warm hot-comb) for special occasions when I was little (maybe 5ish) and no one wanted me to have healthy hair more than my mom. I'm the one who ruined it after I begged and cried for a relaxer at age 10 lol But my mom was extremely gentle and my hair was never damaged from straightening.
ReplyDeleteNot until they get they get to high school or until they turn 13. Or never. now that you think about they should be focus on their studies. ^-^
ReplyDeleteI started getting my hair pressed at the age of 5. My hair was REALLY THICK. My pigtails were on my shoulders but I never wanted to wear it down because it was so thick. I got my first relaxer when I was 16. My hair has never been thick or long since. This is why I gave it all up and went natural
