  1. Just like relaxers aren't for everybody either, I think either way you go, you have to be dedicated to taking care of your hair in the state you chose it to be in. And some people could never give that dedication to their natural hair because the relaxed hair was "easier" to them, and vice-versa. So yea natural hair isn't for everybody. It's all about choices!

I agree with Mekah above. I think many people just cannot give the dedication and patience to natural hair. It's easy to have a relaxer....anybody can have a relaxer, and some may take better care of it than others. But being natural takes REAL dedication and patience, and I am talking oh sooo much patience. Plus it's a mindset too. Remember Marcus Garvey said "Take the kinks out of your brain?" You have to have a renewed mindset to deal with natural hair, not to be repulsed by it, or think it's "bad" hair. I view my hair so much more differently than when I had a relaxer. I thought I was supposed to have a relaxer and that was my place in life.....to fashion and style my hair like a white woman, or another race. Not realizing my hair would be better off in it's natural state. It is about choices, and to each his own. I always try not to berate or put down sistas who choose to still relax/straighten. Some people ar just not quite there yet, and I was at that point once... until I learned to accept and love my natural hair. :)

My family said this EXACT same statement to me this past Christmas holiday! I looked at them just like this: :-\ How is the hair that grows out of your scalp NOT for you? What sense does that make? I've never heard a white person tell another white person, "the way my hair grows out my scalp is just not for me". My family said I can wear it bc I have "good hair" & it curls. *le sigh* Yes, in 2010 we're still talking about good hair. Our self-identity as Black people is so shrewed it's literally sad to think about. I blame us for inventing the relaxer in the first place

I think it's interesting that most people can't accept what naturally grows out of their head...

To answer anonymous's question, Not every woman learns how to take care of their natural hair and end up looking a mess.

I love my natural hair but the one other black girl on my campus who has natural hair does nothing to it placing natural hair in a bad light.
I've also seen women talking about natural hair on youtube giving advice and their own hair shows no progress.

i think that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and so is preference for hair. If someone would rather have their hair relaxed - so what?! If they want to dye it - so what!? If they want to chop it off, fry it, dye it, lay it to the side - it's their prerogative! Some people have a preference for beautiful natural curly/"kinky" hair and some don't. Who are we to judge one another. I agree with the earlier commenter who said as long as your hair is well taken care of and reflects how you want your hair to look than so be it. Do you and be happy. and don't be so judgmental about other folks.

Alot of people cannot handle the work and criticism that comes with natural hair... its not easy. when i had a relaxer it never took me more than half an hour to style my hair, now that im natural it take HOURS....

  10. It definetly could be for everyone if we didn't have such a bad self image. I also think that even some naturals don't have their minds right when it comes to their hair.

  11. I was just saying that it's YOUR hair what you choose to do with it is YOUR choice, who am i to tell a woman with relaxed hair that the natural texture of her hair is whats right for HER. I can't, I LOVED my relaxed hair when i wanted it, now i want my curls back, and I LOVE those too. All about choice and personal preference. And i think even if there wasn't that bad self image about our hair people would still relax, because it's a style option.

  12. I say that people can do whatever they want with there hair. Although our natural hair is hair that came out of out scalp, society just plagues it as a big deal, especially for us women within the black community that have natural hair; claim it as a big deal. HAIR IS HAIR. As women, it is our crown and glory, and it is very important to us. However, it is not the most important thing in the world.

Women from different nationalities dye, fry and alter their hair on a regular basis but we don't question them or make it a big deal about it.

I am a new natural and after cutting of all of my relaxed ends, I view it as a new hair style, a look that I've not seen ever in my life. It is my natural look. The look that God has given me and I'm very VERY happy with it. Some women may not want to wear their hair in its natural state. So they may chemically alter it;Permanently straighten, curl, or dye or wear a wig. It's YOUR BODY. PEOPLE ALTER THEIR LOOKS ALL THE TIME.

I think people can do what ever they want that makes them feel confident and happy within themselves. According to India Arie "I am not my hair".

You can make wearing a plastic bag as a dress FOR everybody- or for you in that matter. The issue here is actually having CONFIDENCE. I think that people saying natural hair isnt for everyone is quite frankly ridic. If your hair grows out your head ANY type of way-(curly, kinky, bone straight etc) its FOR you. But it is up to YOU and no one else to own it and be DAMN proud that that is you. And if the next person dont like it- AND? dont lose sleep over it. You just work on being the best you- you can be.and hold your head high no matter what.
