Sheila

Meet Sheila who transitioned and has been natural for 10 years.

Sheila's hair care regimen...
Wash - once a week
Deep Condition - once a week
Trim - Once a year
Use heat tools like flat irons to straighten - twice a year for special occasions
Use color to dye or highlight - once a year

On hair products...
I only use natural products in my hair. I also make my own hot oil treatment with olive oil, safflower oil and coconut oil. I use honey to smooth and add sheen to my hair.

I usually get my products from Whole Foods Market. My favorites brands are Jane Carter Solutions, Carol's Daughter and Kinky Curly products. I can't use the Kinky Curly all the time or it will dry my hair out, lock it up and lots of hair comes out when I comb. Other than that, it is a very good product.

Favorite hair style...
I like ponytails because it's an easy style, but my husband likes it down, and wild.

You should know...
I hated my hair as a child because I didn't know how to maintain my natural state so, I relaxed it often. Now, I embrace my curl and love it. Once you learn how to control the curl, it becomes more beautiful and you appreciate it more. Embrace the curl!

  1. To be honest...it kind of depresses me to know my hair will never look this good. Its like some sort of curse. i know this site is about bringing us as naturals up but no matter what i do, still never feel pretty enough. There should really be like a natural hair therapist, because no white or permed hair therapist would understand our insecurities

@MissPam, Curly Nikki of www.curlynikki.com is a natural hair blogger who's also a qualified psychotherapist, so maybe head over there to analyse your hair issues.
I think the point of ManeandChic is to expand our ideas about the beauty and styling options of afro textured hair and it definitely does that for me. Instead of thinking that black women are the only people who don't have attractive hair, I know that we have the most gorgeous, individual hair on the planet and with time and patience we can grow it to all kinds of lengths.

I love her hair, If my hair would look like that natural, I would do it to.

You are a very pretty girl, I love your hair to. Only mixed chicks get hair like that, it sucks.
