Tip 6 Low Manipulation

This tip I learned from many women with extremely long hair. The one thing that they all had in common is that they practice low manipulation. For those of you unfamiliar with the term as it relates to hair, manipulation means combing, brushing, styling, using heat tools and tension. So when someone practices low manipulation, it means that they don't do much of any of those things. If you want to retain more length, keep those hands and hair tools out of your hair as much as possible. Most women with crazy long hair just detangle on wash days and that's it. I used to be obsessed with co-washing and detangling my hair everyday, now I just detangle when I wash and I cut back my washing to once or twice a week. I use a Jilbere shower comb and occasionally a Denman brush after I use the Jilbere shower comb to smooth and clump my curls. I usually wear braid outs and re-set my hair every night. There's no need to use a comb. i just moisturize, smooth, braid and set the ends on flexi rods.

Do you practice low manipulation?
Yes
Sometimes
No, but I want to
No and I'm not interested

I'm transitioning and it's so hard to stay out of my hair. I just love to feel my new growth (even though I'm only two months into it).

I cowash 3-4x a week (I work out those days) and I dc once a week. I keep my hair in ponytails, buns, and braid outs due to the heat. It's so hard to not want to touch it, though.

Hum I think there is something to the low manipulation thing. I know a lady with 4a/4b hair and all she ever does to her hair is wash it. She does not bother to comb it or even put products in her hair. She has a head full of beautiful coils. It blows my mind because here I am buying the best products, blogging, reading all about natural hair and she does nothing - OK. I doubt if she puts on a satin sleep cap or sleeps on a satin pillow - tragic just tragic :)

But what do you do on day two?

  4. Anonymous... I wear braid outs so I just re-braid my hair on day two and day 3. No need to comb. I just moisturize, smooth and re-braid.

  5. I just figured this out as well and just started this process two days ago.

I will wash and detangle twice a week and moisturize every 2days. I will wear twists during the week and buns on the weekends when I have something to do.

Let's see what kind of results I get in 3 months.

i wash and detangle once a week, and i wear wash and go's, braidouts, and protective updo's. i straighten every 3 months to check growth. My hair is the longest and healthiest it has ever been.

  7. does anyone know if twist out/braid outs are damaging on the ends with so much manipulation?

  8. I wonder if twist out/braid outs are damaging to the hair since there is so much manipulation.
