Setting Technique: The Wash and Go

From Left to Right: 1. wet detangled and conditioned hair 2. dry untouched hair 3. finger combed dry hair
The Wash and Go (a.k.a. the "Wash 'n Go") is hands down the easiest of all the hair sets. Is it really a setting technique? Yes, I know it sounds like it's super easy and you can literally just wash and go if you want, but for the best results, the hair should be set. What does that mean? The Mane and Chic technique for the Wash and Go requires that the hair be cleansed, conditioned and detangled in sections. After the hair is detangled in the shower with a Jilbere shower comb, more conditioner is applied and left in. The hair is then smoothed and clumped with fingers and a Denman brush in sections. Hair is left untouched until it is completely dry. Once the hair is dry, it is fluffed (for volume) and styled with fingers.

I'm calling it the Mane and Chic technique not to say I invented the style, but to explain my exact procedure. You may have a different technique and that's fine. Everybody's hair is different. You might start out doing things the way I do it and then tweak it to fit your hair. You may even find a much better way of doing it. Whatever the case, it's all fine so long as you're happy with your hair in the end. The most important point here is to make sure your hair is smooth and detangled when it's wet and never ever touch your Wash and Go set until your hair is completely dry.

  1. What type of conditioner you use for wash and go...... I find that many conditioners leave me with a itch scalp.

Also can you ever wet your hair too much. Can you wet your hair every day and it will be okay.

  2. Your not supposed to be applying conditioner to your scalp. Are you?

I use Kinky-Curly Knot Today, Suave, Aussie Moist and I experiment with a lot of others, but I am sure to only apply it to the length of my hair, not my scalp.

Many people wet their hair every day. Many people don't. It's subjective. It's relative. It depends on you and your hair. For some people it's a must to wet their hair everyday. For others it can be detrimental.

Experiment. Figure out what your hair likes. You have to do what works for you.

This question deserves it's on post because there are several reasons why daily watering can be good or bad. It depends on what you're doing and some other factors like pH, porosity and hygral fatigue.

I'll work on posting something about this in the future.

  10. @coffee I co wash in the shower. my conditioners usually change between hello hydration and suave's coconut conditioner . Since I still have somewhat of a TWA I detangle with a babybliss scalp massage brush, haha it works just fine. Apply Giovanni direct leave-in and I am pretty much done. Also, to define curls... I co wash with conditioner, use Carols Daughter "some of maguerite's magic" hairdress, then kinky curly curling custard. I comb each section in an upward motion with babybliss to define curls. WHEW! I hope this helps... btw, I do not get residue with mixing the CD hairdress and kinky curly.
