63 Percent of You Straighten More in The Cooler Months

Can't say that yesterday's poll results surprised me. Over 63 percent of Mane and Chic readers straighten more in the cooler months. I have my main theories about why that's the case: we don't want to bother with wet hair because it's cold also during the holidays many women prefer to rock straighter styles.

Why do you straighten more in the cooler months?

  1. The cold air is not kind to my afro. My hair feels drier and more brittle in the winter.

  2. Yes, part of the reason I straighten more is because it is cold and walking around with wet hair is like asking to get sick. However, another reason is because during the summer the heat and humidity seem to cause my hair to poof/frizz up immediately (even when I deep condition my hair is just thirsty, I've had to start mixing oils into my wash and go leave ins to stay moisturized). Although the winter does seem to dry out my hair a bit more when straight than curly I find it easier to keep from getting cold weather damage when straight than my regular wash and go. I stay curly most of the year except when really cold.

  3. Mississippi humidity is a beast during spring/summer months. Trying to straighten it then would be pointless because my hair will poof back up before I get where I'm going. The cool weather actually allows for straightening.

  4. I straighten more in the winter because it's so dry and my hair hates dry weather! The natural styles just don't work out as well as when it's hot and humid. My [natural] hair LOVES muggy days.

  5. I prefer to straighten my hair in the winter because the style will last longer. I sweat in the head A LOT,so it makes no sense to straighten my hair in the summer, unless it is for a one day occasion. Aside from walking to class or around school, that is the only type of movement that would cause me to sweat in the head. Just a little bit though. I've been waiting all summer to straighten my hair but New Orleans weather is so unpredictable.

  6. I straighten more in the winter because wet hair and the cold weather don't mix well for me. I can also enjoy the straighter hair longer since there's less humidity fighting against all the hard work I just put into doing it. And lastly, flatter hair fits better under all the hats I wear during the colder months. The more stylish hats don't sit right when my hair is natural and out.

  7. When the air is cooler and there is less humidity, my hair straight hair lasts longer and I sweat less. I want to try to start wearing my hair curly again but I am feeling my straight hair, straight bantu waves and braidouts. I promise next week I will go back to my curly do and protective styling to keep my long length.

  8. I like to wait for the guaranteed cool and dry months of November-March to wear my hair straight. The amount of moisture my hair needs when I wear my natural styles is just too much for the winter and not very healthy, because as someone mentioned before, it's like begging for a cold. Also, when I straighten my hair I put so much time into it that I like for it to stay that way for at least 5 days, so to flat iron my hair during the summer would be a waste of time and money (spent on no frizz products...they rarely work for me)

  9. I actually prefer to wear lace fronts and weaves during the winter. It's the perfect protective style during the winter months. The cold air isn't that great to my natural hair during the winter, and straightening my hair wears my curl pattern down easily. Wigs are great investments during the winter!
