How Do You Treat Your Scalp?

Do you realize that your hair and scalp are two different entities? It's sounds pretty evident, but most women I talk to  have a hard time getting this concept. When you look at a clean-shaven bald head, you see there is no visible difference between your scalp skin and your facial skin. This is imperative to understand because many hair issues have more to do with what's going on with your scalp rather than your hair. You can restrict the amount of direct heat you use, steam and deep treat all you want, but if you're not taking care of your scalp, your hair will not reach it's full potential.

Have you ever thought about this? Did you know this already? Am I preaching to the choir?

I learned a long time ago about the important of scalp care, but that doesn't make it any easier to do. Although I do my hair everyday, I rarely paid attention to my scalp except to scrub on wash day. Before going natural I was plagued with seborrhea for years and saw a dermatologist for my prescription shampoos and corticosteriod ointments. After I went natural the itching and severe flaking stopped and I have seen my dermatologist in 3 years now. He told me I'd have the problem forever.

I learned this year that you can't put everything on your scalp and that just because some oils work for some curly girls doesn't mean they're right for me. After a severe reaction to red palm oil, patch tests are a MUST for me. I was using it as a pre-poo scalp massage which caused uncontrollable itching. Initially I thought the seborreah was back so I kept using the red palm oil until a lightbulb went off in my head. I realized the RPO was way too heavy and clogging my follicles which wouldn't let my sebum out, causing flaking, itching, scratching, and thinning at my hairline. I started using plain old jojoba oil on my scalp and leaving it alone. I'm happy to say my hairline is healthy again. I recently started scalp massages using an aloe vera gel and jojoba oil mix. It refreshes, moisturizes and feeds the scalp with minimal buildup.
Lastly, there's good nutrition. Its imperative for a healthy scalp. I added green smoothies to my diet after seeing a youtube video by crownofHisglory showing her hairgrowth cocktail. I decided to try it and have become hooked on the nutrition-packed green smoothies for overall health.
