I'm really frustrated because I just spent an hour writing what was supposed to be this post and then my MAC freaked out. It was very sentimental and I really poured out why I want to do what I want to do. I want to inspire little girls and women to love their hair, but I want to do it in a way that it really hasn't been done before. I want it to be fun, bold, chic, urban and fresh. I want to feature some of my readers, former featured girls, iconic highly textured celebrities and other bloggers. I want to show women of all textures (in the Type 3-4 range, tones and lengths. For the book, I want it to be beautiful. The kind of book you leave on your nightstand or coffee table. I want you to want to look at it everyday and be inspired. I want to donate it to libraries so that little girls can have positive images of highly textured hair. I want to do a traveling exhibition of the images.
Basically, in either direction I go in: the amped up website or the book (or perhaps both). I want it to be super sleek and I want to conceptualize my own original photos featuring women from all around the world. I don't want to steal or recycle the same images you've been seeing on the other blogs. I want to use the wittiest writers out there. I want it to be top notch.
I feel like everything in my life has prepared me for my ultimate vision for Mane and Chic. I've worked in modeling agencies, with photographers, I've conceptualized editorial photo shoots for print magazines, I've styled photo shoots, I've been a writer and fashion/beauty editor for print. I've done everything and it has led me here. Now I want the chance to own my vision and what I think is my life's purpose: to inspire you.
The thing about my vision is that if I do it, I want it to be on another level. I WANT TO SHUT IT DOWN... KILL IT... MURDER IT. But, to do that I'm going to need a substantial amount of dough. I am contemplating building a campaign on one of those cool fundraising sites. It is amazing how thousands of people just donating $1, $5, $50 can make a dream and a movement come to life. I'm hoping that you will believe in my vision enough to help make it happen when the time comes. For now, I'm still figuring out the mechanics.
The vision is so much bigger than me and everything is telling me that I have to be the one to do it.
What do you think?

I've been lurking for a couple of months, and I really enjoy your site. I've learned some great hair tips here (such as the search and destroy method) that have helped me to retain length and reach my hair goals. I like your fashion posts as well and I think you offer great content. I'd love to see where you take the site.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I know you need money to keep growing the site. I work in web marketing and I can tell you this: to make money with your site, you're going to need to sell something. Whether it be a product, advertising, a membership site, etc. I noticed that you do lots of surveys and focus groups, do you think brands would be interested in knowing this information (for a fee?)
I'd suggest writing the book, sell it, and then ramp up the site. Just some ideas to help you along...hope this helps!
I want both!
ReplyDeleteI think either way is a great way to go. If you are planning to do the book or website and are able to get funds together I can offer my services as a graphic designer to help visually make that sleek look you are after.
ReplyDeleteJust send me a follow-up comment and I can send my details.
why isn't there a do both choice? If you want to do a book, you may have to have a web presence.
ReplyDeleteMy very first comment - I absolutely admire your ambitions, I can feel your passion in this post I just read. Whatever you decide to do I know you'll take it to the next level. I'd love to pick your brain some time too - love entrepreneurial women.
ReplyDeleteI voted for the amped up website but actually I want both.
