Out of The Closet: 3 Jewish Men That Get Relaxers

I think it's interesting to see how many men, Jewish men, are coming out about getting relaxers. Recently, Issac Mizrahi was on The Wendy Williams Show where he admitted to getting relaxers. On Watch What Happens with Andy Cohen, Nate Berkus didn't exactly cop to getting relaxers, but he said that he only washed his hair once a week and it's packed with products to keep it tame. In his book, Fierce Style: How To Be Your Most Fabulous Self, Christian Siriano describes in detail his hate for his curly hair and why he gets relaxers.

  1. I'm not sure what/ why they are ashamed about getting relaxers, though. If it works for them why not share and be glad. Unless it's one of those secrets they didn't want to share. i.e. like I would somehow forget where I purchased a pair of shoes someone commented on :2D Then my question is why now? Are they ashamed of themselves? They shouldn't IMHO
I've been more interested in knowing why Jewish women wear wigs? Is it as simple as a trend or is it something different. I see a lot of standard/ plain (obvious) wigs choices and never thought to ask.

  2. GTFOH!! I'm totally surprised! At the same time, I'm a bit disappointed about them straightening their natural texure with a relaxer but it is their hair-their choice. Although Nate's hair looks nice, I'm curious what his real texture is like.

Gosh. So the men succomb to pressures to have a certain look, too. How interesting.

  3. Needless to say hair is not an issue for black women only. We can only talk of what we know until something or someone happens and opens our eyes to things we did not see before.

  4. seriously, had no idea that white folks get relaxers! Wonder if they get attacked by other white folks for not being "natural"?

  5. I think these men are secretive about their hair because for men, even gay men, spending time at a salon is still seen as a sign of a negative kind of vanity.

And Dwana, some Orthodox Jewish women wear wigs as a way to cover their hair for modesty purposes.

  6. I love Isaac's hair :)

One of my childhood friends (a white girl of eastern european descent) used to get a relaxer. Her hair was super curly. The relaxer never straightened her curl very much, but it lessened the frizz.
